Mauritiusโ sugar industry has reached a historic milestone. On 6 December 2024, Mauritian Unrefined Sugar became the first product from the island to obtain national Geographical Indication (GI) status.
This prestigious certificationโawarded by the Industrial Property Office of Mauritius (IPOM) and supported by the EUIPO – European Union Intellectual Property Office, Intellectual Property in Africa, ARIPO, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairsโrecognises the unique qualities of Mauritian unrefined sugar, rooted in centuries of heritage, know-how, and the islandโs exceptional terroir.
The GI status confirms the authenticity and quality of the product while enhancing its reputation and commercial value internationally. It also provides legal protection against counterfeiting and reinforces Mauritiusโ position as a premium origin for natural unrefined sugars.
Behind this achievement are major sugar groups who have long demonstrated a commitment to excellence, sustainability, and traceability. This collective recognition rewards decades of innovation and expertise in the cultivation and transformation of sugarcane.
This milestone strengthens the countryโs global standing as a leading producer of high-quality unrefined sugar and opens new perspectives for exportsโespecially in markets where consumers increasingly value the origin and integrity of what they consume.
